Solid state 3CCD 1080i camcorder for cheapskates

I'm beginning to dig Panasonic. This thing records 1440x1080 to a H.264 codec which I'm sure will be a pain to edit .... but 40 minutes on a 4GB SD card is pretty usable (quality of pictures notwithstanding ...)

Less than a grand, too.

It does sound pretty interesting and at a damn good price. But, there's always a but, great as solid state cameras are surely there will be times where you want to save your footage as a master tape. With this camera you'd have to store you master footage on lots of memory cards or on your hard drive. That's a minor point though. I would be interested to see if the footage can be easily edited though.

My movie "Crooked Features" (yes I'm still going on about it) was shot on tape, and although I have the rushes somewhere, the 17gb master DV file is long gone. I do keep a master DVD image around, as well as a master DVD disk. In the digital world where masters and copies are identical (okay so the MPEG2 DVD is not the same as the DV stream, but it does look identical to my eyes) it makes sense to me to keep mutliple copies rather than a single master ....

Pretty cool. With an 8Gb SD card down to about ?50 (about $8000...hehehe) you could certainly afford enough "tape" for a days shooting.

What would be the plan though? Get 2 cards and when one is full swap it for the other and transfer the full one to a laptop or something?

I guess the pure joy is that the cards are reusable (unlike magnetic media, unless you want to risk striping old stock?! *shudder*) So you'd save a fortune.

And the quality should be good enough for TV at the least.

After a bit of searching I believe that Canopus Eduis will edit H.264 footage. Pity Edius isn't a better editor. Can't Final Cut do it?

I'm wondering the same thing. While working with the final cut program, I seem to remember seeing the kind of codec, but it could be my overwhelming sense of optimism.

That does look quite impressive... especially for a consumer HDV camera, but I have to ask, what other hardware/software went into it? Surely that's not JUST the Canon?
